This course provides a historical, theoretical and practical overview of the principles and themes of Christian social teaching and social justice. On the one hand, it explores approaches of Catholic social responsibility through the official texts, and on the other hand, it compares it to the evolution of the Christian social thought within the Protestant and Orthodox theological milieux, their teaching and practice. A special attention will be paid to the contemporary topics such as social justice, war and peace, and the question of the environmental responsibility.

The course “Christian Social Teaching: West and East” is designed for students, clergy, seminarians, educators, researchers, church and community workers, and anyone interested in Christian perspectives on social and ethical issues. It is especially relevant for those who wish to explore the traditions of Christian social teaching in the West and East and understand their significance for contemporary society, including questions of human dignity, justice, social responsibility, and the role of Christians in public life.
